Welcome to Palladiumweddingbands.co.uk one of the UK’s leading websites providing information on Palladium Wedding Rings and Palladium Diamond Engagement Rings.

Although palladium has been part of the jewellery industry for many years, only recently has it officially become a precious metal, receiving its hallmark in 2010. Since that time the use of palladium in jewellery, including palladium wedding bands and palladium diamond engagement rings has increased dramatically and is predicted to continue to do so.

Michael Allchin, chief executive of The Birmingham Assay Office, said, “Palladium provides a new opportunity for the jewellery trade. Designs which may have been impossibly heavy or expensive in platinum can be very attractive and commercially viable in palladium. There are already some stunning palladium pieces on the market; the reassurance of a U.K. hallmark will give the consumer added protection and confidence when purchasing palladium jewellery, and we expect this to be a significant growth area for the jewellery industry.”

Palladium is available in both 950 and 500 forms, denoting 95% and 50% pure respectively. The purity of the palladium is included in the hallmark along with the Pictorial symbol for Palladium, Pallas Atherne, the Greek Goddess of War, Wisdom and Crafts, and after whom Palladium was named. The mark had being designed especially for use as part of the Palladium Hallmark, however this is optional.

Palladium Hallmark

U.K. hallmarking has been in practice for more than 700 years. No piece of fine jewellery can be sold as silver, platinum or gold in the country unless it has been hallmarked. The mark has three compulsory symbols: the sponsors mark, identifying who submitted the piece, the town mark, indicating which Assay Office hallmarked it, and the fineness mark, which denotes its purity.
Palladium is a rare, white metal, much rarer than gold and possesses many benefits. As palladium is a pure metal it is virtually tarnish proof, removing the need for rhodium plating that is often required for many white gold items of jewellery. It is visually indistinguishable from platinum and, although platinum is heavier; palladium is actually around 12% harder.

White gold is not a pure metal, like palladium and platinum, it is made up of yellow gold mixed with other white alloys to give its white colour. The metal will never be 100% white so in order to achieve a look similar to palladium and platinum another precious metal known as rhodium is electroplated on to the metal. Rhodium is a white, reflective, extremely hard and virtually tarnish free metal so is the perfect protective coating for white gold jewellery. However, the rhodium coating gradually wears off over time. Many people choose to have their rings re-plated with rhodium. Others love their rings with the natural not-quite-white look of white gold.
